Family Dinner

“Family Dinner” is a series of hand-painted 3D renders depicting Lunar New Year meals shared between the artist’s Cantonese family and their partner’s Chinese-Malaysian family. Through celebratory foods and ritual, the works explore food as a language of care, memory and cultural continuity across diasporic experiences.

Many dishes are chosen for their symbolic meanings and homophones, such as 发菜 (fat choi), hair-like black moss traditionally eaten for prosperity because its name sounds like 發財, meaning “to become wealthy.” Chinese-Malaysians add and adapt to these traditions through rituals like the Prosperity Toss, where colourful ingredients, including novel ones like salmon sashimi, are tossed together for luck. The higher the toss, the more prosperous the year ahead.

Presented as framed prints accompanied by animated digital renders accessed through QR codes, the works combine painterly aesthetics with contemporary digital practice. The artist offers a cozy window into private family life, inviting audiences to reflect on the traditions and gatherings that shape their own sense of home.
